Upgrading linux computer, transfering HDD w/installed RH9
 

I am not sure if this is a kernal question, a config_files question or ..?

So I start by asking here in hardware:
I want to transfer my 6gig HDD that has RH9 installed and running and place it in my (completely) upgraded box.
The old 'puter is an intel MB(Seattle), PII cpu, SDRAM mem, GeForce AGP video (GigaByte), SB audio, intel NIC, usb, HP prn on paralell port.
The new 'puter is an intel MB(byCompaq), PIII cpu, SDRAM mem, GeForce AGP video (Matrox), onboard audio, onboard NIC, usb.

My redhat 9 is "up2date" with patches and such, has all my add-on apps, customizations, java programming software, etc. AND I'd like to keep it while transfering to the new machine.

_So_ .. am I looking at a scenario of (1)upgrading the current install as the O/S detects new hardware, (2)re-configuring certain RH config files to conform with the new hardware or (3)re-compiling the Kernal (which is current Jan. 04)?

I am doing this more in the idea of a learning experience than "what is the easiest way". For example, we come into work and the office manager's machine has a fried MB. We have a used machine; let's swap out the HDD.

I think you'll have to recompile. Your set-up in the new computer is very similar to the in the old, so the system may still work (I'm no hardware expert). But even if it does, a recompiled kernel will make better use of the chip upgrade and allow you to dump any unnecessary modules.

Have you recompiled before? The best "how-to" that I've seen is here on these boards.
