I've got an old Compaq Armada E500 that I installed Debian Linux on. All in all I'm very pleased with it. After I installed Debian I replaced the CD with a DVD. Now the DVD can read CDs but not DVDs. Anyone have any suggestions as to how I might get the os to read DVDs?

Thanks,

Firstly make sure that you have a link from the device to /dev/dvd use something like this if the drive is /dev/hdc ln -s /dev/hdc /dev/dvd as root changing if different the output of dmesg | grep hd should show you the drive getting detected so you can see the proper drive letter. Next make sure you have the libdvdnav4 and libdvdcss2 packages installed. Lastly can you be a little more specific as to what program(s) you are trying to use and what happens when you try to access the drive if the steps above do not work.
I installed libdvdnav4 - couldn't find libdvdcss2 with apt-get. I can see the dvd filesystem now, though it's under cdrom0. There is no /dev/dvd. I loaded a movie but my movie players don't seem to see it. Is there anything I can do to view movies on dvds?

That is why we both told you about the link to the /dev/dvd you need to create it for applications that need it. For the dvdcss try to see if there is a libdvdcss.
quick thought about playing movies, i dont believe the usual debian repositories carry libdvdcss due to copyright issues, so you may have to look somewhere else for the package. try videolan's site www.videlan.org. they have a debian package of libdvdcss in their own repo. ... also their player is great.
oh and as for the proper link in /dev, i think as long as your can access the drive from whatever mount point its already set to it'll be fine. most players let you fine tune where they look for the dvd anyway.

Good point must have been brain dead when I made that post. Add this line to the sources.list and apt-get update to fetch the package list file then try the livdvdcss2 again, change the sid in the line to your release eg. sarge, etch.
Code:
## Various Multimedia Helper Apps Mplayer, Real, w32codecs, etc.. ##
deb http://debian-multimedia.org sid main
I've installed libdvdcss2 and vlc. I did create a link to /dev/dvd. I can select the device with vlc but no video. I'll poke around the vlc site and see if I can come up with anything there.
