hi there, i installed 11.04 and kinda updated the nvidia drives (gtx 580m ) and it worked, and also i had an additional monitor everythinng worked fine.
now i upgraded to 11.10 i cannot get the nvidia driver and the display working on the second monitor, but in the additional driver settings i see the driver is active, and it says upto date.
Upgrading Ubuntu often does not work as expected. I would recommend to use your package manager to remove anything related to the video driver and the to use the Additional drivers program to install the driver again.
I did that too, no use..
Now i see the second monitor with a grey screen on it. But its not showing in the displays settings.
I also upgraded to 12.0.4 still the same. Isnt there a solution at all :-\
The one in ubuntu is not even detecting the display. The nvidia settings shows the display and when i enable it. Is where i get the grey screen on the second display. And freezez.
Do you have xorg.conf file in /etc/X11 ?
If so - try to move it (Im sure I know you should do a backup), and restart X. I used the nvidia-settings many times, never got me a freeze. Usually in these situations I do setup in nvidia-settings and save the xorg.conf file in my ~home dir. Then I can copy it or make a link from /etc/X11
