Upgrade from Ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 caused scrambled screen

I upgraded from Ubuntu 18.04.5 to Ubuntu 20.04. Upon new re-boot screen is unusable as it is scrambled. See attachment.

I don't have a clue as to how to fix this. I can't use the machine to fix itself as I can't access the control center.

I think there is a 'ctrl xx' to get out of the x-window and access the terminal but then what?

Do I need a different driver to fix this?

What you posted says you're still on 18.04, but it's not obvious where that info came from. Have you rebooted the machine again? Ctrl-alt-Fx, where x is any number between 1 and 6, will get you to a terminal.

Sorry sgosnell, That info came from Ubunbtu 18.04.5 (inxi -options) when it was operating prior to my upgrading to 20.04.

I was then able to change the screen resolution to 1680x1050@59.88hz with no problem and it worked fine.

As soon as I installed Ubuntu 20.04 the scrambled screen started. As a matter of history I Installed Ubuntu 20.04 from flashdrive alongside Ubuntu 18.04 and the same scrambling happened. At that time I just gave up and went back and re-installed Ubuntu 18.04. I'm now trying to get this resolved once and for all.

By the way the AMD Ryzen 5 3400G DOES support Linux. (so the docs say). I forgot to include the CPU info before.

Quote:
CPU: Quad core AMD Ryzen 5 3400G with Radeon Vega Graphics (-MT-MCP-)

4: 1393 MHz 5: 1368 MHz 6: 3034 MHz 7: 1380 MHz 8: 2434 MHz
It would seem to me that if the graphics works on 18.04 it should work on 20.04.

Have you tried changing the display resolution in 20.04? Also consider the refresh rate. Those can sometimes make a difference. Other than that, I'm at a loss. I know little about Ubuntu.

I gave up and re-installed Ubuntu 20.04. I fooled around with the resolutions and settled on 1280x800. It will not accept 1680x1050, 1440x900.

Who knows I've waste enough time on this.

Thanks for your help, R
