Updates on any improvement in Hard drive fallback

Anyone I ask locally has told me that there is improvement in the inability of any and all Linux to do hard drive fall back.

Hard drive fallback is the ability to locate the channel on which a drive is newly installed as opposed to where the drive was originally installed automatically-- like a Windows machine does without blinking.

Last time i tried to change a drive I got
a black screen with a kernel panic message. Has this ever been fixed in Grub or Lilo or whatever is supposed to get a machine going?

A "yes" or "no" will do.

I'm not familiar with that term, but Linux (particularly in a dual boot) will have the locations of the root partition(s) written to the boot manager file (lilo.conf or GRUB). If you move the drive to another position (eg, primary master to secondary master) then it would be no surprise that the boot would fail (because the root partition is not where the boot manager says it is). This is easy to fix though, simply by updating the boot manager file, or even easier, to just avoid the problem in the first place to leaving the drives where they are.

If you are moving a drive from one PC to another, just keep it in the same location - in other words, if you want to move the primary master from PC #1 to PC #2, just make sure it is installed as the primary master in #2
