Unfortunately, it appears that im getting about 100-200 FPS on glxgears under Slackware 10 on a 2.6.9 Kernel. I have the video drivers installed that is on the site (or so I think, how can I tell?). My buddy has about the same specs, but is getting about 3000FPS which is reasonable. Any ideas?
My system specs are as follows:
AMD Athlon XP 2800+
ASUS A7N8X Rev 2.0 Deluxe (NForce 2 chipset)
ATi Radeon 9800 SE
SATA Raptor 10k RPM (36GB)
SATA Maxtor 7200 RPM (250GB)
That happened to me. The reason is that your ATI drivers are not installed. Does Slack have any of its own specific ATI drivers you can download? I know that Suse has an FTP server that has drivers made specifically for Suse, and they are a lot easier to install than ATI's. If not, then give ATI's drivers another try.
Yeah, the ATI drivers are definitely not installed. Did you get any error messages during installation? Does Slack have any sort of ftp server with drivers for it?

Read the docs and whatever messages you get during install and follow their instructions
Seriously, why would you have a "generated by xf86config" config file when you're clearly instructed to: ATI display drivers successfully installed
please run 'fglrxconfig' now
Hints:
-for a nforce chipset select "UseInternalAGP" "no", this way the driver will use the kernel's agpgart.
-the showstoppers in Xorg.0.log will be lines starting with (EE), look a couple of lines above the warning you posted.
-when your config is done properly, if it still fails, see if you have the "fglrx" module loaded [...after the failed attemp], if not, load it manually and try again. If it works then, add the "fglrx" module to your module loading file [...etc/modules.conf, modules, rc.modules, ...whichever Slack uses] so next time you reboot it will be set correctly.
-Look up the exact specs for your monitor and use the proper "hsync" and "vrefresh" so you'll be allowed to use the reso your monitor is capable of.
-Also there's quite a few "ATI driver how-to's" on the net by now where this, and other stuff I overlooked here, is discussed extensively ...google is also your friend
It had nothing to do with the configuration file. As soon as i compiled agpgart into the kernel, contrary to what those so called tutorials you were suggested instructed to, it jumped up to a few thousand FPS
