Question Unpluging USB pen drive, after unmounting it, crashes OS

Hello! Something strange is happening with my computer at work after I started using my new USB pen drive (flash memory). I tried all kind of fstab configurations and methods of mounting/unmounting it, something isn't ok. After I unmount the device, all is well until I decide to unplug it from the USB port. After the moment it comes out, the entire system freezes completely; all system, including mouse pointer, hdd activity - ALL!
The distro used is Red Hat 8.0. What can it be??
Thanks in advance for any idea that can be of help!...

Maybe it needed to be ejected, not just unmounted? I know that's the way iPods are; I'm not sure if it's the same for a USB key--it may depend on the brand. You get to use Linux at work?
