"Unknown Port" Error Using Kodak Easyshare C300 Digital Camera

I checked the HCL before I tried, and noted that this brand (EasyShare C300) is supported by the default USB PTP drivers. I configured it properly, and plugged in the camera, but when I try to do anything with it, the system gives me a series of errors; first, "Unknown Port", then a failure message from whatever action I'm trying to perform. The camera is properly plugged in the USB port, and is on; I'm not sure what the problem is.

Okay, it's not just an unknown port error. Sometimes the system will say "System was unable to claim the device". I read that these are common errors in configuration, but when I followed the steps to fix them, nothing happened. My camera is detected by Linux, but nobody can read from it except root (from the command line). I set up hotplug according to the info at the gphoto website, but it's still not working.
