unable to play more than one sound file at a time.

greetings. im not too sure if this is a hardware problem, or a problem with the software that handles the hardware.

i cant play more than one sound at once. for example: in windows i am able to listen to music and hear people sign on on msn instant messenger or aol im at the same time.
in linux, i cant.

according to windows, my sound card is:

Creative AudioPCI (ES1471, ES1373) (WDM)

this is an onboard sound chip.

Can two programs use the sound card at the same time in linux? I just did a test and I don't think they can.

I just played a midi, an mp3 and system-noises
in KDE (just for the heck of testing ;}) ... and it works.

The point is whether the apps you are using go
through either the artsd or esd, or try to play by some
other means ... if they use one of the demons you
CAN play two things at a time ;)

Cheers,
Tink
