Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Whenever I attempt to mount either of my two cd drives with a cd in them, i get the message
mount: No medium found
Please check that the disk is entered correctly.
My output of dmesg also shows a long list of errors similar to z-vet:
cdrom: open failed.
cdrom: open failed.
cdrom: open failed.
cdrom: open failed.
hdd: tray open
end_request: I/O error, dev hdd, sector 64
hdd: tray open
end_request: I/O error, dev hdd, sector 8388600
hdd: tray open
end_request: I/O error, dev hdd, sector 8387576
hdd: tray open
end_request: I/O error, dev hdd, sector 8387352

First, let's establish that i have two cd drives; cd drive A and cd drive B
1-I just installed Mepis 3.3 yesterday from cd drive A and have successfully booted from a boot cd multiple times from cd drive A
2-I could not successfully boot from drive B
3-BUT prior to installing Mepis 3.3 I could never get cd drive A to mount, but never investigated why because i could get by using cd drive B
4-Prior to installing Mepis 3.3 cd drive B would mount without any problems
To put it short: I can boot from CD drive A, so it works, but it won't mount
CD drive B won't mount, either, but it won't boot, so it's possible it is just dead
Also, please be patient with me, I am just some girl who has a friend who loves linux, so I don't really know that much, but I can follow good directions. I won't be surprised at all if this is all a result of some small, stupid mistake.
BTW, said friend doesn't know what to do about it
I am just wondering if I should just give up on these old cd drives, or if I need to change some settings? I have tried to include all the info that is pertinent.
My CD-Rom was dead, i just checked it on another machine, so i bought a new one...
adorablesquire, i had an exactly same output of dmesg about my drive, so i think yours is finished his career too...
