Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Unable to install module snd-intel8x0 on SuSE 9

My sound card is detected by SuSE 9.0 Linux Kernel 2.6.5 as 82801BA/BAM AC`97 Audio. Yet there is no sound at all when I boot into KDE 3.1. When I go to configure the sound card in YaST I receive the following error message:

An error occured during installation of 82801BA/BAM AC`97 Audio.
The kernel module snd-intel8x0 for sound support could not be loaded.
This can be caused by incorrect module parameters including invalid IO
or IRQ parameters.

The sound works fine under the default kernel 2.4.21. I'm a Linux newbie so I need someone to direct me in the right direction to fix this.

I also noticed that my old kernel, 2.4.21, uses a snd-intel8x0.o file and my new kernel, 2.6.5, uses snd-intel8x0.ko. When I tried to load the module manually I was told that the module format was in correct.

I have looked around and I have seen others with this problem, but unfortunately they were given answers that I didn't understand. Can someone please enlighten me.

X.

You could try to use alsaconf instead of Yast. Just type 'alsaconf' on a root console. This worked for me on a similar system.

Good luck!
