Unable to get the on board ethernet card to be detected
Hi,
I am trying to get my linux WS 3.0 to be on the network but the problem i am facing is with the detection of the onboard Ethernet cards to be detected
When qeried with lspci it shows the following entry
Ethernet Controller: Intel Corp.: Unknown device 1079 (rev 03)
Please advice as to how I can install this on this box
Also the ouput of the ifconfig command only shows the loopback interface as "lo"
Please Advice.....
Regards,
Jaspreet Sandhu

Well first,
Do you know what ethernet controller it is ? Two of the obvious options you have once you do know that is :
A) get the driver from the manufacturer (of course from another computer)
(if it doesn't exist through the manufacturer then it may 3rd party)
B) maybe its available in the kernel, but just not compiled . So you
maybe able to recompile the kernel to get this going.
Again, my suggestions are based on knowing the model of the controller

if they are onboard you have one of two options to figure out what controllers you have :
A) you can open the case and track down the chips embedded on the motherboard and read the name/model of them. You'd have to have prior knowledge of network cards at some degree to be able to know what chip is what.
B) you can figure out your motherboard model, go to manufacturer site and see what the specs are. This is probably the easiest way to go about it rather than rippin' open the case.
