The modem thinks there is no carrier signal present on the telephone line. This could mean you've got a phone off the hook, there's a problem with the telephone line (can you make normal calls?) or the modem is fried, amongst other things.

If the modem is physically disconnected you should get "NO DIALTONE"

You might try ATDT instead of ATDP, and check your phone cabling. If all is well and your telephones are working correctly you can try another modem...

Hope this helps!

the thing is Iam getting the dial tone and is able to dial the number but after 10 sec or so during the connection process ie when u hear the sound of connecting it get's dead . giving "NO CARRIER" message.

Iam able to use the modem from WINXP and can connect to the Internet. But not from RH 9.0 . Iam able to make NORMAL CALLS using the line..

My telephone service provider has enabled only PLUSE dialing and as such TONE dialing is disabled so I guess no use of ATDT..

According to a website dealing with hsp micromodem(http://www.peacefulaction.org/sayamindu/pctel.html#BUG ), the "no carrier" error is due to a bug on the driver software. Remember that this is a software modem designed only for windows and not really for linux.

If you get this error you just have to disconnect and reconnect!

Oh!

Sorry, I thought you were on about a hardware modem (shoulda checked first :D )

It cirtainly looks like a driver problem; the modem itself is working, perhaps you could email the driver developers?
