[Solved] Unable to boot from any LiveCD, some DVD drive error messages

Hello.

I recently installed new DVD drive to my PC. The old one broke and went back to store. Before that, everything was working just fine. I have currently 4 systems installed on the PC.

1) Arch Linux (my main system)
2) Ubuntu 8.04
3) Edubuntu 7.10
4) Windows XP XP3

It is not my main machine, it is used as backup server/test machine. All the systems on this PC were installed using old drive.
Since I installed new one, I can not boot any live cd on that system with the exception of arch linux install cd. At least from those systems I tried (various versions of Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint).
I always end up with initramfs shell and keyboard (USB connected) not working. Before dropping to this shell, system tries to mount root file system. Fedora says, that it was unable to mount root filesystem.
Googling revealed a lot of similar problems, but usually with existing installations, not while using live cd.

All installed systems on that PC boot just fine, but I noticed, that Arch started to give me some errors while booting kernel. They are releated to optical drive. See ata2 section on my dmesg:

I tried to remove that drive and attached another one, but got the same result. I also tried to change the connecting cable, but it did not help.
I am running out of ideas here ...

Did you change/check either the /etc/fstab, /etc/mtab on any of them?

No I did not change any of them. But this problem is happening very soon in kernel booting sequence, I think it does not matter what is in fstab or mtab at that time.
And my main problem remains unable to boot live cd, where this should not matter at all.

Hi,

Do you have the drives setup with 'CS' on that channel? How did you setup the jumper for the new 'DVD' drive?

Drive's jumper is set to master and recognized as master by BIOS. Secondary master - on primary controller are two HDDs.

Hi,

At boot pass the parameter 'noprobe=ata2' to the kernel. Post the output of 'dmesg'.

BTW, the current 'dmesg' shows the hdd on 'ata1'. Right?

How do you have your scsi/usb setup in BIOS?

noprobe=ata2 on live cd resulted in the same behaviour as I described before. No boot.

Booting the installed distro with noprobe=ata2 resulted in this dmesg - the sam errors as before show up, but boots fine.

So noprobe seems to have no effect on the systems behaviour.
There are two disks on ata1. I tried to disconnect them, switch the cable, connect DVD drives to ata1 instead ata2 - no change in booting live cd result. :/
USB is enabled and I also have additional PCI USB card. ATA 100 RAID is disabled and SCSI is not present on my system.

I solved this problem by adding kernel boot parameter pci=noacpi.
