Umax Astra 2000P (HP3200 parallel port) scanner on x86_64

I have been battling for some time with this... I have the scanner in the subject of this post, and while I was able to get it working with previous versions of Linux (Fedora and other distros), ever since I migrated to x86_64 have not tried the scanner. Long story made short, I had the need to use the scanner, so I decided to try my luck and see if I could make it work with my shiny Fedora Core 5 x86_64 system. Thus far I have been complete unsuccessful at trying to get this scanner to work.

One funny thing, though: I have installed both x86_64 and i386 packages of the sane backends (as a depenendency for the Wine TWAIN support), and I'm not completely sure if they are somehow conflicting. In any case, I started by setting up the scanner as it should be:
  • Edit the /etc/sane.d/dll.conf file and uncomment the umax_pp line.
  • Inspected the contents of the umax_pp.conf file, and at first left it alone.
  • Made sure xsane, xsane-gimp and sane-frontends were installed.
  • Tried to do scanimage -L to see if the scanner was being detected.
There is one strange ting about scanimage -L, nothing is printed to the console, not even a message stating that no scanner could be detected (which is rather strange).

Does anybody else have such an scanner coupled with an x86_64 system (hardware and software)? I'm about to tear off my hair about this issue, as I have to scan something rather urgently.
