UDMA unhappy on via vt82c686a in Debian testing

I recently upgraded my aging non-udma 10GB IBM hard drive to a shiny Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 Plus 200GB ATA-100 8MB Cache and reinstalled Debian testing. However using the default settings dmesg spits out lots of

hda: dma_intr status=0x51 {DriveReadySeekComplete Error}
hda: dma_intr error=0x84 {DriveStatusError BadCRC}

using hdparm anything mdma2 or below works fine, but above it doesn't like.

I''ve tried 2.4.26-1-k7 and a 2.6.6 kernel and two different IDE cables (a 10cm long rounded cable rated at ata100, and a standard 80-conductor flat cable the exact same kind that is used with the other 2 ata100 disks on my raid controller)

The pc is a tbird 800 on an abit kt7-raid (vt82c686a so ata66) with 256mb pc100 , intel1000 NIC and soundblaster live platinum, and an ancient s3 agp card.

I've googled around and seen people have had similar problems but am still in the dark on how to get UDMA (what's the point of having a gigabit card if my hard drive is limited to 14mb/sec)

Thanks in advance
