Ubuntu/XP - Not able to recognize hard drive after installation

I have a 160 GB hard drive that i use to use when backing up my files i would like put them on that hard drive. it was connected through EIDE. This was before i did ubuntu, it was xp. But now after i started dualbooting i installed XP and then Ubuntu. neither of them can recognize the hard drive anymore. the bios said its a hard drive 1 failure.....BUT when i put it in my other computer. it reads it just fine :D. so im backing it up now. and im hoping there is a way to make it work. if so please tell me. thanks

make sure the pins on the back of the hard drive are correct. they should be setup so the drive is a master not a slave.

Hey, i have a dell. the dell manual said something like always keep it on cable select. The bios wont even let me boot the second hard drive. It says that its a failure, and thats before i get to boot linux. so even if linux needed them to be a master, the bios wont let me boot the second hard drive. so i assume its a bios problem.

Do try it anyway. In my own box I had settings
  • master
  • slave
  • cable select
  • unused
Was really slave but worked only with unused
