Question [SOLVED] Ubuntu won't boot after new Motherboard Install

Hey all,

I had a motherboard go out on me and had to replace it. And of course I can't get back into ubuntu. Is there any way to get ubuntu to recognize everything or do I have to reinstall?

Just a couple of notes:
Switched from an AGP mobo to a PCI.
Switched from an AMD to Intel.

About the only things that are the same are the sound card, hard drive, and 2 CD-Roms. Everything else was replaced.

Motherboard is an ASUS P5Q3.

The error I get when I start to boot into ubuntu is:
Boot from (hd0,0) ext3 57575051-06d1-4405-80db-b94523afc4c9
Starting up...
[ 0.380222] PCI: BIOS BUG #0[00000031] found
Loading, please wait...
Gave up waiting for root device. Common problem:
-Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
-Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
-Check root= did the system wait for the right device?)
-Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/57575051-06d1-4405-80db-b94523afc4c9 does not ext. Dropping to a shell!

BusyBox v1.10.2 yadda yadda yadda
(initramfs)

I also get that message when I try to boot from recovery mode or the LiveCD.

Any help is much appreciated.

A little background about my Linux proficiency:
Long time Windows hostage and Linux dabbler. Recently made the switch completely to ubuntu, so you'll have to baby me a bit with the command line info, though I am fairly comfortable with it (reminds me of the DOS days). But when you give me some steps to follow, please don't leave anything out assuming I'll know...because I won't

Hi,

Welcome to LQ!

What error messages do you get when you use the LiveCD? Which LiveCD are you using? You do have the proper boot order for the BIOS? It does sound like you are not booting the LiveCD, the errors would not be the same, at least not identical.

Post error information since we are not sitting nor standing in the same room.

BTW, check to see if you have any BIOS setup for virus checking or blocks.

Using Ubuntu 8.10 on the HDD and LiveCD.

The error I get with the LiveCD is:

Quote:
0.380222] PCI: BIOS BUG #0[00000031] found

BusyBox v1.10.2 yadda yadda yadda
(initramfs)
Boot order for the bios is CD, CD, HDD.

I'll check the BIOS for

virus checking or blocks.
However, I don't believe there is any conflict with that.

It isn't that the motherboard isn't seeing the CD or HDD. I can begin to boot to the HDD or the CD, but then I get the error above with the CD or the error in my OP from the HDD.

When you installed the new MoBo, did you run the BIOS set up that came with the board? Check that you have the latest BIOS. Then try the liveCD. You will not be able to boot from the HD unless you reinstall the OS. Changes to the MoBo are not within the parameters of the OS.

Drat...well, is there a way to install Ubuntu on top of itself and retain the data/installed programs/files?

Yes, but I don't remember which directories to backup. I know /home and /opt but I think you need to back up a couple more also.

What I normally do is re-install into a new partition - I have a separate /home partition to facilitate this. Use the same userid/password on the re-install, and everything (standard) should "just work".
Also works on upgrades.

Then run "aptitude search '(~i !~M )' > myPackages" on both systems and compare the lists to see what you need to re-install.

Thumbs up Solved!

Figured it out!

The

seems to have been caused by the having the hard drive plugged into the SATA_E connector instead of the ICH10R SATA connector on the ASUS motherboard.

After I swapped the connector, it boots into Ubuntu flawlessly.

Thanks for your help all...I'm sure I'll be back
