Ubuntu volume control sliders will only sit at top or bottom, but no adjustment b/w.

I haven't the foggiest idea (despite much time invested) how to find out what driver my system has loaded for sound, or what applets might be controlling it, but I'm happy to follow any directions to obtain this info if helpful.

(Mindbogglingly frustrating Linux endeavor #68)
