Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question Ubuntu Server hardware

Hello all,

i hope everybody is doing well.

i have come across a dilemma on which hardware to use for a home-cloud server (owncloud/nextcloud) using ubuntu server CLI.

the hardware that ive been looking into:
- Lenovo IdeaCentre Q150 / Dell Optiplex FX160
- Stick
- Raspberri Pi

im looking for something like a small/tiny factor in order to have it out of sight and not that noisy (fan).

can you please provide me an input on which would be better to use?

Thanks!

There are some smaller devices like pi and others that might be used for minimal tasks.
Not sure what programs could be run on them but I'd look into it. New prices for a full pi may go as high as $80 with stuff. The same price you could get a refurb amd64 system.

Personally I use a small Liva X2 but it ran about $120 on sale one day.

Some web sites show how to get you going on an atom based deal like a pipo.

Although kind of expensive, you can get soho nas devices that have quite a lot of features. The smaller ones are arm based and go up to atom and beyond.

Basically I will be running either ownCloud or Nextcloud.

planning on having the server on and move some data to an external drive

so the smaller the better so its not that noticeable and stable enough to process the data in a timely manner/response.

I've heard two sides of the PI. One is that it is great. Other that it is buggy. Not sure I've seen any real data on that. ownCloud has a few web pages on the Pi. I think the limit would be the internet connection as I assume you want this for out of home use?

yes, only for the house members.

so outside access is only if needed to check a picture/file stored in the home server.
