Ubuntu server (2.6.12) on a SATA drive, Intel chipset?

I have to install Linux (Ubuntu server, Ubuntu 2.6.12 kernel) on a SATA harddrive (WD Raptor). As I still don't have a mainboard I'm looking for one that features a SATA controller that can be used from within Linux, without any trickery (so I should be able to do a simple install after booting). To be safe, I think that getting a Intel chipset based system is a safe way to go. Would, for instance, an i865 based solution be a good idea?

The 865 has been supported in the mainstream kernels since 2.6.9. You could go as far as a 945 chipset system if you wanted better sata capabilities. I have the Intel D945GTPLR and it runs great. Kernel support for it was in 2.6.11 (I believe - may have been earlier). The main difference is going to be the processors supported. I don't thing the 865 supports the 64-bit enabled processors, and it also hasa much slower memory bus.
