I am running Ubuntu 6.06 GNOME

I plugged in the Serial Modem into the 9 pin serial port on the motherboard, turned it on and these were my steps from there

1)Turn on computer and log in
2)Networking->Set up modem(put in phone number, detect it(/dev/ttys0), etc.)->activate it
3)It dials to my service and connects (DSL Extreme is my dialup company)
4)Under Network Tools it shows that it is connected to the server (i confirmed that it is the companies server)
5)But, nothing works Lynx, Firefox, Synaptic, apt-get........nada

also kppp and GNOME ppp do not detect the modem but Networking does and can dial-up....very odd.

so,

what files and print outs do I have to include for the best diagnosis.

are you able to ping an IP on the Internet? what about a domain name?

what error messages do you get??

have you checked that it's not a firewall issue?? perhaps you have some iptables rules with the names of your ethernet interfaces in them, which need to be changed to the name of your ppp link...

When I ping an IP or a Domain name, Network Tools freezes.

The error messages I get in the ppp dialers is "cannot open modem" or "modem not detected"

How would I check that it is a firewall issue? Ill surf the net in the mean time for iptable rules, etc.

So the modem conflict was actually between my router that all my comptuers print from and the modem it self. If I unplug the computer from ther router, then the modem works. The router, when plugged in, writes its own DNS servers and wipes out the ones from my ISP. This doesn't happen with the Mac laptop.

So the next question is, how do I get the two to cooperate at the same time.

The Linux desktop, the mac laptop, and the printer are connected to the router. The Mac prints, but the desktop doesn't print.

Finally, if i connect to the internet on the desktop or laptop, is there a way to share the connection through the router?
