Ubuntu, hp zv6000
from everything i've read, ubuntu is one of the only releases that will pick up the 200m ati card that comes stock on an hp zv6000.....so i dropped ubuntu on my laptop today (the zv6000), did a full install with the boot command: linux vga=771 and when it comes up i'm getting errors trying to start X.
is there something that i need to do? under /etc/X11/xorg.conf i'm seeing the correct drivers for the 200m, i'm seeing it set the resolution to 1280x800 (which should be correct)....
any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx!

I have the Compaq R4000, which is the same laptop and I am running Debian sid from a net install. I am using the stock Xorg7 ati driver that the install identified. The XORG driver is not as fast as the ATI driver bit it does everything I need it to. Ndiswrapper works well for the wireless card. Are You trying the 32-bit or the 64-bit version

Have you checked the Xorg log as instructed? I don't have an ATI card but the error message looks like your xorg.conf file is setup properly. With nVidia cards I know you have to turn dri off for them to work properly. Perhaps you should check the install documation for ATI cards and see if you need to do the same.

Have you also checked the setup guides for Ubuntu on using ATI drivers, especially if they include parts about whether or not to disable DRI in your xorg.conf?
