Ubuntu copying to Seagate external HD

Hello ...
So I'm using a 100GB Seagate external HD and copying my entire home folder onto it as a backup method.

but when i go to replace the last backup's folders with the new, i get a GABILLION error messages. it says Error 'Read only file system' while copying... and it lists a single folder at a time, times all the photos i have in the photo folder, and several (but not all) folders. And it won't let me cancel out. I have to manually click "Skip" like a thousand times.

it ocurred to me, this could be because the first time i copied those files onto the hard drive, they may have been read only files. in which case i would not be permitted to replace them? just a guess.

so i tried to create a new folder on my hard drive to dump a new set of files, and it says Error creating new folder. Error "Read only file system" creating new folder.

how do i make my hard drive NOT read only!?
thanks for any help

Try CHMOD 777 *?

Its a bit confusing, since it DIDNT give you the error the first time, and how its a "read only file system."
