Question Ubuntu + ATI 1600XT graphics card

I currently have the Edgy Eft ubuntu (6.10) and I got a new graphics card. I have the ATI 1600XT. It's a really good card but when I first get into the GUI, the refresh rate is slow, and if I use Firefox to try and surf the web to any page that requires me to scroll down, it's choppy. It's like the video card can't keep up or the drivers are wrong versions. I did try to do some of the isntalls that I've found online, but everytime that I try one and reboot, my monitor Displays a message saying "Image out of Range"

I'm really lost on this and I'm still new to the whole Linux scene. Somebody please help me out please.

I have exactly the same problem with the same ati card using the vesa driver.
It's a bug on the latest Xorg 7.1, I've already reported it but looks like it would take long before it's fixed.

If you are using the x86 ubuntu I suggest you installing the proprietary drivers from ati. If you are using the x86_64 you are in deep .... (trouble) like me.

To tell you the truth I feel kinda good to know that I'm not the only one in the planet having this combination of problems.

if the bug on Xorg 7.2 is fixed then most probably ubuntu and other distros won't have this problem.

I'll be watching bugzilla..
