UBUNTU 8.10 Driver Issues
I seem to be having driver issues for my on-board RTL8101 nic. First I had to give it a MAC address using macchanger to get it to work, then it freezes up my UBUNTU 8.10 distro every time I try to download a file or browse the net. Load is the RTL8139c driver by default. BTW, I have to give it a MAC address every time I boot, is there a work around for this? Thanks for your help.

Some others have reported such a problem for that NIC and RTL8111. Though I myself never faced any problems with the latter.
Check for the correct driver. Blacklist the other driver.

Where can I get the right driver?
Thanks for your response. I have searched the M/B web site (Gigabyte) and they only have Winduh's drivers. Realtek says that the proper driver is 'built into the kernel'. I thought that it was driver related too, can you point me to another driver?

Your driver is r8101 and not r8139c. r8169 or r8168 may work as well. Try blacklisting or binding the interface with a specific driver

amani, thanks for your response. The problem solved itself. It turns out that the on-board LAN in question was finally quit working all together, no led or anything. I got a cheap one at a local retailer and UBUNTU picked it right up and it works fine. Have a Merry Christmas and a happy new year.
