Ubuntu 8.10 doesn't print documents containing some characters

I can't get my HP Laserjet 4MV to print documents if they contain graphical characters such as bullets, arrows, boxes. It doesn't matter if i am printing from OpenOffice, Acrobat, or any other client they just don't print. The printer behaves perfectly in all respects: the printer display shows the correct document, the print queue shows it, lights flash as per normal on the printer but no paper feeds through. Any suggestions?

I've investigated further and installed the latest version of HPLIP. Still won't print graphical characters. Is there any way I can re-install the firmware in the printer itself? I have seen instructions for Mac OSX and Windows to do this but nothing for Linux (Ubuntu). Any suggestions at all might be helpful.
