Ubuntu 5.10 screen resolution problem

I am running Ubuntu 5.10 and using a 17" KDS CRT monitor. Sometimes when I start up Ubuntu it works perfectly. Then, other times I load it up the resolution and the refresh rate is all messed up and it can't be changed. It does this on and off all of the time. I noticed when it is working right and when it isn't working the refresh rates and screen resolution is different. I didn't know if there was a driver or anything I can do to fix this problem.

if you check out the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file, do you find any errors when the resolution is all out of whack? It may not be loading the driver for your video, or running into some sort of other error. If you aren't sure about perusing the xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log files, post them and we should be able to work it out.
