Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Ubuntu 32 bit -> 64 bit

I currently have a Dell 9400, 32 bit system running 32 bit Ubuntu 9.10. I am going to build a new desktop system that will use a 64 bit Gigabyte P55 USB3 mb and an Intel I7-860 with a SATA drive.

My question relates to the migration path. Once the new 64 bit system is ready, can I move the SATA drive from the 32 bit dell box to the new 64 bit system? Will this work as a temporary solution until I build a 64 bit Ubuntu OS?

Currently, I run a Geforce video card and a X-FI Creative Sound Blaster audio card.

Running a 32 bit Ubuntu on 64 bit hardware is no problem. That seemed to be the focus of your question, so you may be worrying about the wrong issue.

The graphics card is more likely to be the problem when you try what you described. Installing Ubuntu on your existing system configured the xorg.conf file for your GeForce card. So you need to do something to fix that when you switch to a system with a different card.

I'm not sure what other hardware customization might have occurred with the install of Ubuntu. I expect most of the rest of the hardware customization occurs on every boot so long as you didn't recompile the kernel to one more specific to your hardware.
