Ubuntu 20.04/Mint 20 on Alfawaise X5 - Diagnosing Boot messages
I picked up one of these cheap Alfawise X5 boxes:
https://forum.freaktab.com/forum/tv-...10-android-5-1
Hoping to tack it to the back back of a screen for use as a drawing table with Krita, Open Toons and such.
Short story is: Bit of rigmarole to cleanly void it of the preinstalled a dual boot Android Windows 10 system, but installed Mint 19 easily, and works fine. Let it sit a while and Mint 20 was released so upgraded to Mint 20 without a hitch too. Boots cleanly, albeit a tad slowly (40s). Looking at the boot logs I see som areas of concern and am stuch interpreting it. Kernel boot messages are not very lucid alas.
I attach a complete dmesg logs of the boot, but the areas of concern are:
Code:

I'd really love some traction on understanding these messages and what they mean, what causes them, what they consequence and how I might fix them?

Great if everything works.
ACPI errors are very common and usually only consequential where hibernation and such is concerned.
You might be able to suppress this completely by adding an option to the kernel command line, maybe acpi=off.

Turns out not everything works ...
Sound support I noticed is missing. In that there's only a Dummy Sound device available and if I plug headphones in to the audio socket, I get no sound out of them. Not a crisis as the box is intended for sound, but still a curio and interesting tof ix becuase we could indeed use it as well as a video unit if I put speakers onto it.
I suspect these messages are the clue:
Code:
[ 10.140957] sof-audio-acpi 808622A8:00: warning: No matching ASoC machine driver found
[ 10.148105] sof-audio-acpi 808622A8:00: error: no matching ASoC machine driver found - aborting probe
[ 10.148116] sof-audio-acpi 808622A8:00: error: failed to get machine info -19
[ 10.148121] sof-audio-acpi 808622A8:00: error: sof_probe_work failed err: -19
and have a discussion here:
https://bbs.minisforum.com/threads/h...fawise-x5.256/
To study and learn a little from (including that raidensub found no joy there in 2018 ;-).
And I have yet to test Bluetooth properly.
Re: the ACPI errors, I appreciat that tip and will come back to it, after I've had a crack at getting sound out of the audio jack. Hard to find out just now what sound hardware is onboard the Alfawise X5.
Inxi says little:
Code:

Sound Server: ALSA v: k5.4.0-58-generic
aplay -L also lists only the HDMI sound:

And I can't really leverage HDMI sound on this construction, conceivably the headphone jack yes, or a Bluetooth link, but not HDMI.

Got it, sound first.

Always post commands & complete output.

Can you get a hold of that fix-headphones shell script?

Slow progress on this (low background priority). But looks like the Windows 10 Device manager reports two Audio devices: Intel SST Audio Device (WDM) and Realtek I2S Audio Codec. The machine has an HDMI sound device and a headphone jack. The Headphone jack has a small RealTek chip behind it. That will be the sound chip for the headphone output. I don't know RealTek chip that is unless I open the box and use a magnifying glass as I'm using low res photos of the board here:
https://forum.freaktab.com/forum/tv-...274#post668274
As Windows uses a I2S driver, that's a strong clue. I2S is a serial bus for sound and not it seem s particularly esoteric and I should hope long supported by the Linux but may rely on a proprietary driver.
Code:
$ lspci -k | grep -A5 Audio
$ lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Atom/Celeron/Pentium Processor x5-E8000/J3xxx/N3xxx Series SoC Transaction Register (rev 36)

00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation Atom/Celeron/Pentium Processor x5-E8000/J3xxx/N3xxx Series PCU (rev 36)
01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 0c)
Not sure how lspci works or what it can find, nor how the I2S bus and the PCI bus relate (all a bit low level for my day to day savvy).
But interestingly:
Code:
$ cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [Audio ]: HdmiLpeAudio - Intel HDMI/DP LPE Audio
Intel HDMI/DP LPE Audio
which agrees with inxi and aplay, but Cinnamon Sound Settings only lists one sound device called "Dummy Output". Which isn't even encouraging that it's seeing the HDMI sound. That may be a consequence of my having a DVI screen attached by a an HDMI to DVI cable (i.e. I don't have a sound capable HDMI device plugged into the HDMI port).
I read through this thread now closely:
https://bbs.minisforum.com/threads/h...fawise-x5.256/
And while I haven't tried the one trick of disabling the HDMI sound in pulse audio to see if ALSA finds the headphone jack, I don't see a need to as the problem is clear already in inxi and lspci etc, lower level than pulseaudio by some. So that conversation simply never went to completion and that user (raidensub) seemingly never solved the heaphone jack sound problem they had.
Still, only clues so far, no real progress.
