Two usb questions.

1) In usbview, when a device shows up in red font, what does that mean ?

2) When inserting a usb mass storage device, how do you know which special device is has been assigned ?

check /var/log/messages or dmesg when you insert the device
tail -f /var/log/messages

Usually gets assigned to /dev/sda. Mount it thusly:
# mkdir /mnt/key
mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/key

in answer to question `1': it means that the device does NOT have a driver associated with it. So when you find that the device isnt working, theres your reason.

In usbview; 'hci_usb' shows up in red, along with my net md walkman.

Why is hci_usb showing up? It is a driver, not a device...

Pass. Ask me a question on sport.

As a guestimate; i'd say that usbview shows devices and drivers and as you cant have a driver for a driver it will show up red, but as i dont have a linux box at the moment (using AIX currently) this all comes from memory.
