two sound cards not working (extigy(usb) and integrated)
Hi, I have two sound cards. one is creative extigy and its usb and another one is integrated something.. I can't turn off this integrated sound card from bios and i don't care if it works or not. i want to get this usb sound card working.
When i start this extigy my suse 10.0 founds it and it appears to kmix.. it also appears to xmms alsa, but when i try to play something from xmms it says 'Please check that: Your soundcard is configure properly, You have the correct output plugin selected, No other program is blocking the soundcard.' If i try to use amarok it says that 'xine was unable to initialize any audio-drivers.'. I have tried to install it in yast. I have also tried to run alsaconf but it doesn't find it .. it only finds my integrated sound card and i think this problem is because i have two sound cards and they can't handle each other. ps. sorry for bad english :D and now i'll paste some information :D uname -r Quote:

sometimes the switch for disabling on board stuff is on the mobo.
regardless-- you will NEED a good driver for that usb sound card. hunt for it, the manufacture and maintainers don't always have the best one... individuals do however-- who are working on this hardware. i will now preach: STAY AWAY FROM ANYTHING USB UNLESS YOU *MUST* HAVE IT!! lol good luck, lettuce know ;) |
ok i forgot to mention.. my pc is fujitsu siemens d8820 and it's laptop :D..
and it works in my friends laptop without any problems (it was about 2mins and we got it working and it worked better than in windows :D). and i once got it working but i dont know what i did .. it was early in the morning and i decided to test few things .. and it worked .. now it doesn't want to work and im sure it's because of that integrated shit |
no, even if you get that intergrated card taken off line, you STILL need a good driver for your usb card!!
you SHOULD be able to put ten (10) soundcards in if you want.. (this is linux, remember ;) be patient.. we'll figure it out. |
but it works very nicely in my friends laptop (suse 10.0 too, plug in, power on, wait a few secs and it works :D) and my laptop finds it but cant make sound (i think it's because of that crappy integrated. because i have read that extigy needs to be no. 1 card).. and i have heard from many people that it works without anything special :D

that fact that it works on another computer means nothing, except that the card is not broken. linux comes in a million flavors, so each one is just different enough to be uncompatible with other various software or hardware. good luck. |
If kmix works and xmms can't output maybe arts is blocking the soundcard.
If you think the problem is the onboard card you could try disabling the module for the onboard soundcard in modules.conf |
and i have also tried those exaudio (extigy oss drivers) drivers and they didn't work either.
what is arts and how i make it not to block my sound :D |

if you do you will loose some of your sound abilities. i doubt taking arts out will fix your problem because your card is NOT being recognized yet. |
Arts is the kde sound server. When two programs want to use your sound card at the same time one of them can't do it, thats when arts act as something between the programs and the soundcard and mix the music from both programs and pass it to the soudcard. So if xmms would be set to use arts as an output there shouldn't be two programs trying to access the soundcard at the same time.
I would try killing arts just to see if arts is causing problems. Try typing killall artsd in a terminal. You can also try to go to the kde control center and in the sound section there is the sound system (arts). There you can set the autosuspend time to something small for example 10 seconds so when nobody uses arts xmms and other programs that don't use arts can access the soundcard. |
... now i got it working ... yesterday that xxms error message disappeared (i didn't do anything :D) and then it starts to play those music files... without sound .. today i loaded uhci-hcd (modprobe -v uhci-hcd) and it works almost perfectly :D
