Two hardware problems, mandrake 9.2
 

Hey there people, well I wouldent concider my self a linux newb, I was running linux mandrake 9.1 as a server etc about a year ago when I was a member of the cyber army, but I recently got the urge to install 9.2 for some bizar reason.
But my onboard soundcard isnt working its a.. :Soltek Mainboard (SL-KT400A-C) VIA KT400A Series my Audio is AC'97 Audio Codec Two Channel Compliant according to my manual the CD contains a Avance AC'97 Audio Codec Driver.

Second problem is my screen resolution, you can laugh if you want.. but im running the Hercules 3D Prophet Kyro Series (PCI) and well if I change the screen res above 800x600 When I reboot or log off it dosent load X at all, it flashes then takes me to a terminal prompt asking me to login, I then try startin X server or KDE or any form of GUI and get a X server error.. I can cope with low screen res but I can't live without sound.. so any help is appresheated.

if i've identified your sound card correctly, from the mobo specs, that will be your card.

This is gunna sound like a stupid question but what are the terminal commands for up directory? lol i cant get out of my user directory lol.

concerning the sound, try opening a mixer and unmuting the sound, or try running alsamixer. see what you get.

Woah.. for some reason nothing was muted.. but after running KMix it plays sound.. however after playing a MP3 in xmms after about 20 seconds to 50 it turns to static noise.. bad windows mount? because I am playing MP3s from my windows partition, but thanx again for helping with the sound :) however do you know whats affecting my screen resolution?

glad your sound is working, i'm looking into the x situation as we speak. i suspect that your using the vesa driver, and it's limited. what type of monitor are you using, do you know the specs? you could post your XF86Config, or possibly XF86Config-4(don't know what you have) and the driver install failed looking for something to do w/your kernel. post the complete error message, and the output of

uname -r

i'm guessing, but, i suspect you don't have the kernel source installed.

I dont know wich X im using i think the -4 one.. and my moniter is just standard plug and play.. i think the highest res is 12xx by 1xxx i know i cant run it above the max ones mandrake allows because when i run it at like 17xx in windows it just stops responding.. but no I don't know the specs unfortunatly :( but sound seems ok now, no more of that annoying static, and sorry if I am bugging you lol, but as your signature implys, one must learn ;)

i'm still looking into the video, found several more informative things, nothing definative yet. one thing i see after looking at the readme, from the earlier link, and your current kernel, there is a *.src.rpm, available for download, inwhich case there are instructions from the readme to build your own rpm, for installation, which should work w/your current kernel, providing you have the kernel source installed. the only reason i'm not going to advise that route just yet is i'm still not certain that it's the correct driver. i'm looking into STMicroelectronics STG4000, which is what lspci returned. if you get board waiting until i'm satisfied we've found the right driver, you could give it a shot. first i reccomend find your monitor specs on the web, or at least p[ost the model # and name, so i can help you search for the specs. you're going to need that info.
