TV Card, BT878, bttv: no sound

Hi there - I've been scanning around the forums and the internet to find an answer to this. I've basically got the card working, just from searching

butttt - for some reason, I can't get sound to play.

I'm using a Hauppauge WinTV card using the bttv driver on BT878 chipset with a philips tuner. I have a cable running from the cards line out to my sound card's line in with the channel unmuted. Sounds works ace on this system and the picture quality of the TV picture is decent but there's no sound from the tuner.

I've searched the forums but I can't find any definitive answers which have helped. I missed a Simpsons episode because of this problem, so I'm not a happy bunny.

Contents of my modules autoload file:
Code:
tuner type=1
bttv card=10
These are correct, in accordance with the listing in the Documentation for Video4Linux.

Any help in getting my sound working would be appreciated.

I don't currently have a TV card installed but I seem to recall that sound is controlled at more than one level. First of all on the TV card (regulating its output to the soundcard, maybe accessible through the v4l interface or the application). Secondly through the sound card itself in the usual way. If you have e.g. xawtv search through the package documentation for other sound level controls. Just guessing tho'

Well - the closest thing I have found, is a BT878 sound driver for ALSA - which I compiled into the kernel along with the usual emu10k1 - but unfortunately, the soundblaster didn't want to work with it - so I removed it. Besides, that shouldn't be necessary really.

Any other ideas?

I looked at an old version of the bttv source code I had lying around and there is very interesting Sound FAQ in there, which had all sorts of things I didn't know, as my card worked out of the box. It seems like there is a wide variety of ways that these cards handle sound (although they are all more or less identical for video). Anyway, I'd suggest you get a copy (http://bytesex.org) and check it out.

Wow - I feel like a dunce...

For some reason, ALSA has 2 different volume controls for my line in. Strangely enough, the control name "Line" was not the channel... how daft.

Thanks anyway
