Tsharc serial touchscreen not working at gdm login

Hello there,

I am running a FC7 install with a 2.6.21 kernel. My touchscreen is a Hampshire Tsharc serial touchscreen operating on COM4. I have taken their official drivers and following their instructions installed them sucesfully, the touch screen works perfectly once calibrated. The system has a USB keyboard and no mouse connected.

The problem I have is that whenever I am at the login screen, the cursor fails to respond to touch, then as soon as I log in as any user, it operates perfectly.

The Tsharc daemon which detects touch is configured to load at boot time, and confirms to me that it has done so when booting up. Runinng lsof /dev/ttyS3 informs me that the tsarc daemon is in control of the correct serial port

When I touch the screen at the gdm login, the following error is displayed in the tsharc log:

Cannot open Display: 0 Screen: 0

Having tried various xorg.conf settings without success, I am at an end for possible causes to this behaviour. Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this problem between the login screen and being logged into the system?

Thanks to help from my colleague, we managed to solve the problem. Picking up on the error message

Cannot open Display: 0 Screen: 0

we identified that the daemon might not be correctly picking up the display that gdm was using.

The solution was to modify the gdm configuration to restart the Tsharc daemon when gdm initialises, this was done by adding the following command to /etc/gdm/Init/Default

boot.tsharc restart

A cleaner method may be to remove the daemon starting from boot scripts and have it start proper when gdm initialises.
