trying to use modprobe

How do I use modprobe to load a module I've compiled?

I've compiled several modules in attempt to enable the MIDI devices for my soundcard. Since I'm on a knoppix liveCD, my /lib/modules directory tree is readonly so I can't copy modules anywhere there.

So I have these modules in a writable directory under my home (on ramdisk).

When I use insmod to load it, I get unresolved dependancies (which means it did NOT load, is that correct?)

But if I use modprobe to load it, the module isn't found, so does modprobe only check for modules in the official modules directory?

as far as I know: modprobe is a somehow semi-automated module-installer-thing..it only looks certain place(s?) for the modules, so if you have a module in some other dir (as in your case) it will not find it and therefore will not load it. you need to use insmod instead I think, and then the dependencies are a problem - well, what are the dependencies; have you tried to satisfy them? you still need to get them filled before the module works, no matter which method you use - if modprobe could satisfy them for you, then so can insmod but you only have to manually check out how and then do it...
