Trying to Install Sound Card

Hello All,

Well I have finally got SuSE 8.0 installed. I am still a newbie at this for sure but I am learning more each day, I hope. I have an Intel 82801DB AC'97 sound card built into my mother board and I was trying to activate it. But I am having no luck. I have looked at the web site http://www.alsa-project.org/ but to be quite honest I got confused as to what I should do. Admittedly I am still thinking Windows.

First I really did not find an exact match for my card.
Second all I saw were instructions on how to MAKE a driver, is that what I need to do?

Would someone mind giving me a helping hand as to what a should do.

Sorry for being so nieve,
Steve

I just did a little googling and whenever I searched for your above card, it kept pointing me towards the i810 chipset. Try typing (as root) modprobe i810_audio and then try to play a sound file.

Thank you for the reply, I will do that.

I now have to get KDE working again I made the mistake of doing a online update to update KDE from version 2 to 3 and when I rebooted the box KDE did not boot back up.

So... now I need to learn how to FTP RPM's, install them, and then make sure KDE is configured right to start when I boot. Sheesh....

Is there a site that does a step by step on this process? (I have not stop looking myself) I think that this has been the tough thing with me and Linux so far, with each Distro everything is different so it is hard it pinpoint how to do a simple install. Not complaining, just growing pains.

Thanks for any help.
Steve

Hey I have the same sound card in my mobo. The problem with trying to install it is that the sound card is of type 82801DB. Apparently it's not recognized by the module. I think the PCI hardware ID is 24c5 which is listed at ICH4.

So whenever I try modprobe i801_audio it fails.

I'm trying to hack it and figure out how to get that sound card working.

I ended up installing SuSE 8.1 Pro and it work without a hitch. If I remember when I get home I will look to see what mod it loaded for the card.
