Trying to install ndiswrapper 1.23 on FC5

I am a complete noob when it comes to linux and I'm trying to get my netgear wmp11 v4 to work with Fedora Core 5. I downloaded ndiswrapper to a flashdrive and have been trying for about the last hour to install it.

But when I open up a terminal and type:
Code:
tar zxvf ndiswrapper-1.23.tar.gz
all I get is
Code:
tar: ndiswrapper-1.23.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous erros
So I think I'm missing some sort of file but dont know what or where it should be.

Thanks!!
Jeff

It is not finding the file you downloaded because it is not in your terminal's current directory. (Assuming you didn't specify otherwise you have some default directory for downloads. Your terminal probably opens with /home/yourloginname as the current directory.) You must either give the path to the downloaded file, or change directory to the place you downloaded it before issueing the tar command. You may find useful the commands 'pwd', which tells you your current working directory, ls which lists the files in a directory, cd which changes directory, and find and locate, which are ways to find a file on your system. Type 'man commandname' to get information on how to use each command.

BTW, terminal prompts often display by default the current directory. ~ refers to your home directory, ie. /home/yourloginname.

Thanks that helped a bunch.

Now I tried to do tar zxvf ndiswrapper-1.23.tar.gz but it still wouldnt work even after I changed the directory. But I did figure out that i could manually copy it over into the home/Jeff directory and unzip it there.

Then I changed the directory again and tried the next install step of
make uninstall
make

There were errors there too saying that its missing files again. Then it said that it couldnt find kernel bulid files in /lib/modules/2.6.15-1.205_FC5/bulid

and it told me to give the path to kernel build directory with KBULID=<path> argument to make.

I'm hoping I can get this fixed but so far my linux experience hasnt been too good.

Thanks again,
Jeff

EDIT:
I just tried to go in through the root login and try the yum install ndiswrapper but I then get an error:
Cannont find a valid baseurl for repo: core
Error: Cannont find a valid baseurl for repo: core

You need to install your kernel sources. Refer to your distribution's documentation or search this board for instructions on how to do that.
