Trying to install driver for NVidia GeForce PCX 5750

I am trying to install my NVidia video card with OpenGL support (I have a game that requires it), and I can't seem to get it installed.

What's worse, I tend to destroy the installation every time.

Here's my lspci:

Here's my uname -r

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04

On a clean install, Ubuntu does NOT give me any help finding an appropriate driver. "Additional Drivers" within System Settings insists that no proprietary drivers are being used. Well, that's true, but I want to INSTALL one.

On a clean install, I have to use Ubuntu 2d to do anything. 3d support does not work without an additional driver.

I've attempted to install the NVIDIA driver manually from the nvidia website (the 173 driver), and after that install, X did not finish loading.

I've used the nvidia-current driver, which works well enough, but it doesn't load OpenGL, so when I go to run my game (Ryzom), it stops.

I've tried another driver I found on a forum (involiving adding a repository but I don't remember what), and it worked well enough, too, but it also did not include support for OpenGL.

I would REALLY appreciate some help! I have searched the forum, but I can't find a thread that has helped me. If someone can point me to one, that would be great, but what would be even better is some direct help.

Thanks!

The problem that the driver for your card (version 173, current doesn't support your card) doesn't work on Ubuntu is the cause why the "Additional Drivers" application doesn't give you this choice. There is currently no way to install the proprietary driver for your card in Ubuntu 12.04.

Do you know if it's supported in 11? I would be willing to roll back, but I'm getting weary of installing over-and-over!

There is a package nvidia-173 in the repositories for 11.10, so i would assume that it works.

Ubuntu 11.XX will have support dropped in less than 1 year (October 2012 for 11.04, April 2013 for11.10). If its worth installing 11.XX for a few months use is up to you.

I doubt that nVidia will be updating the 173.XX drivers to work with the xorg version in 12.04.

I'd consider getting a G210 or similar newer model nVidia card...the G210 is a little faster, should use less power and run cooler than the PCX/FX5750, and uses nVidia-current not the ancient 173.XX drivers. G210s go for $30-40 so its not an expensive card either.

Thanks for the info

I rolled back to 11.10, and I'm able to use my graphics card. Perhaps by April I'll pick up a new graphics card.

Thanks everyone!
