I am trying to install my NVidia video card with OpenGL support (I have a game that requires it), and I can't seem to get it installed.

What's worse, I tend to destroy the installation every time.

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04

On a clean install, Ubuntu does NOT give me any help finding an appropriate driver. "Additional Drivers" within System Settings insists that no proprietary drivers are being used. Well, that's true, but I want to INSTALL one.

On a clean install, I have to use Ubuntu 2d to do anything. 3d support does not work without an additional driver.

I've attempted to install the NVIDIA driver manually from the nvidia website (the 173 driver), and after that install, X did not finish loading.

I've used the nvidia-current driver, which works well enough, but it doesn't load OpenGL, so when I go to run my game (Ryzom), it stops.

I've tried another driver I found on a forum (involiving adding a repository but I don't remember what), and it worked well enough, too, but it also did not include support for OpenGL.

I would REALLY appreciate some help! I have searched the forum, but I can't find a thread that has helped me. If someone can point me to one, that would be great, but what would be even better is some direct help.
