Trying to get a linux server install for my old laptop.
Hello,
I am a web designed that is new to linux. I am trying to find a version that will install properly on my old toshiba satilite laptop (specs posted below). Alls i really need is a text only version of linux, gui would be nice. It will be for running apache w/ php mysql est for home use only. It will only host a local webpage for testing est. I currently run a windows version but i do want to learn how to use linux when it comes to apache est.
Ive tried 5 or 6 versions of linux, most ubuntu or offshoots of it. As well as a old Redhat 5.0 official copy my brother had laying around. Cant seem to get any to install. Some will boot and work directly from the CD but i do want something installed on the HD itself.
Thanks!
Specs:

I would suggest trying Debian. You probably don't want to use Gentoo, which requires local compilation of all packages. Arch would work well if you want to know more about how a linux system works. Debian is the base system of ubuntu but doesn't come with all the branding, and probably with a lighter weight window manager as default.
If you can get the system to work on the livecd, then you can get the system to work without it. There must be a kernel configuration error going on somewhere; forgetting to include something or the like.
Be careful when asking this sort of question though. Because it is so much based on preference of the person responding, you may not find that the advice really fits your needs. If you can ask more specific questions which are objective you will get better answers.
Cant seem to get any to install. Some will boot and work directly from the CD ...
Details would help.
Have you tried running hardware health check software such as Toshiba's own (assuming they have one publicly available) or MemTest86 ... ?
Assuming the hardware is healthy, chances are it's one or more specific hardware items that are causing the trouble. Installation failure messages might identify the problem area and allow more focussed research for a solution.
I installed and used Zenwalk on a laptop of much lesser specs and it worked like a dream. And Im no expert. Before that I installed Mu on the same laptop.
I would go for Zenwalk.!
autoPhil
they have both install and livecds headless no X
with lots of addons
great thing is it will run from hdd in frugal mode like with usb with persistency
meaning a frugal install (usb/hdd) would be about 700+MB
vs a hdd install at about 3.5+GB
good support too and its slackware current
perhaps the Greatest distro of all?
