Trying to figure out proper X driver for the Averatec 3700 laptop

I have a Averatec 3700 laptop. The documentation says it has a S3 Unichrome pro VGA card. I believe this is the "via" driver for X, but it fails to work and I must use the "vesa" instead. MPlayer will only play dvd's in a small screen. Everything else does full screen. Maybe I can't get full, but I had to check with other people to see if it can be achieved.

Type
lspci
on the command line and see what your kernel found at boot.

This URL might be useful:

http://unichrome.sourceforge.net/

You will need to find a binary package for the driver or compile the source yourself.

Besides vesa, vga or svga may help.

You may be able to get useful information from the logfile for X:
/var/log/XF...
