Trying to configure my external 56k serial modem?

Installed Kubuntu 6.06 as a dual boot with XP Pro, but I can't seem to get my external serial modem to connect. It worked fine in Ubuntu. Keeps telling me it can't find /dev/modem. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks.

Hi,

does /dev/modem link to the correct /dev/ttyS? and do you have the rights to access /dev/modem and /dev/ttyS?

Type the following:

dmesg | grep -i "tty"

dmesg is a command that outputs kernel messages to the screen. grep sorts out the ones that contain "tty." Use that to find out what tty number your serial port/modem is at, and plug that into the configuration for your dialer program. My external modem/serial port is usually at /dev/ttyS0 so I type that into KPPP or GnomePPP or whatever, and it works.

You will need to create a link using the following command:
sudo ln -s /dev/ttyS? /dev/modem
? is the port number from following information if you don't already know it.

this will allow wvdial and pppconfig to work correctly. You will have to know what port your modem is connected to. You can use the command:

sudo dmesg | grep tty

to find out which port your modem is on.
