Unhappy Trouble with the soundrecorder!!

Hi,

I posted about not being able to connect my mixer to the computer two days ago, I didn't get any replies . So anyway... I inched my way to figuring out how to get the sound recorder to work, at least I think it works.... It says that it is recording, but when I try to play it, I don't hear anything. Also, it plays the recording only once and then it doesn't play it anymore, it hangs and then it crashes
I am not sure if I have all the wirings correctly. I can listen to the Internet radio trough my stereo. So I think I got the lineout pretty much figured out. But I am not sure about the line in. I played around with a whole bunch of configurations of plugging the stuff in the three holes in the back of my computer... no luck. Does this have anything to do with the runmixer?

Thanks
PS: I have redhat 9 and my soundcard is VIA AC'97 controller (WDM)

I had a similar problem with the Gnome sound recorder - I've decided its just a poorly written piece of software.

In the end, I use rezound for recording audio files. It is a lot larger and more complicated - but it also works all the time and has some more advanced features.

Give it a go and let me know how it goes. Rezound can be downloaded from rezound.sourceforge.net

There is an RPM for download that is 100% compat with RH9.

Lemme know how it goes! Hope this helps!

I have a microphone that I know works,
at least it did when I had Windows.

I get no error messages, and I can "record",
but when I play it back, the file is silent.

When I blow on the mic, I hear static on the speakers, but, as I said, it refuses to record.

This is the same in Red Hat's distributed "Sound Recorder" and "Rezound".

What can I do to fix this?

Hi,

I tried this with a mic last night and I was able to hear whatever I said. So I would try this out and see if I can hear anything and then move on to the soundrecorder (very bugy!). Also make sure that your volume control setting is set so that mic is on record and everything else but igain is muted.

# record 4 seconds of audio from microphone
EDT% dd bs=8k count=4 </dev/audio >sample.au
4+0 records in
4+0 records out
# play back sound
% cat sample.au >/dev/audio

check out: http://www.djcj.org/LAU/guide/Sound-HOWTO.html

they have pretty good tips.

I installed rezound on my RH 9 system and though my sound card works fine for playback, and I can here my voice through the mic into the soundcard, I can't get anything to record. I've never tried to record anything using the mic before now. Where is my mistake?

I have this error at this command;

]# ls -l /dev/sndstat
crw------- 1 root root 14, 6 Jan 30 2003 /dev/sndstat

]# cat /dev/sndstat
cat: /dev/sndstat: No such device
