Trouble with the display and sound

Hello All,

I am new to the Linux commmunity and use it only in the office. I dont know much abt it either.
Here in the office I am required to have CentOS 2.4.
I am having problems with my display resolution and sound card being not detected. Earlier my resolution was 1024X768, but for some reason after connecting a USB wireless mouse to my system, first of all the mouse started to behave weirdly and then it messed up my display and changed it automatically to 800X600, which I cant change using the System Settings=>Display tool.
I have Compaq Presario C304NR notebook with Intel Media Graphics Accelerator 950 video card.
Also it does not play any sound. I dont know if it has not installed the proper or something?
Just to let u guys know, I have VMWare installed on my laptop and use Windows XP in it. Even XP is not able to detect the sound card.
I am just unhappy with my laptop not working properly.
Could any of you guys help me out with my problem? I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks,
- Paramit.

Since you are talking about business equipment in a business environment I suspect that you have a local system administrator. If you do then you should talk to that person. Generally you shouldn't put different devices (USB mouse or whatever) on a business computer. It just makes work for the business tech support people.

You would be surprised how many system changes have to be made in order for a USB mouse to work. You have to enable SCSI device support and SCSI HID support to start. This will definitely affect the X software configuration. Apparently when you inserted the USB mouse some configuration monitoring process automatically changed your X configuration settings and decided that 800x600 resolution was the safest choice.

Business computers are not toys. If you worked for me I'd terminate your employment just based on what you've said here.

Thanks for ur input stress_junkie. But just to let u know, it is my personal laptop that I am using in the business environment. A small solution would have helped, rather than ur earlier reply.
I thought this forum is for people to solve their problems and not to increase them.
