trouble with tape

I have (finally) set up a travan ide tape drive as a backup solution on one of my linux boxes and it works fine except for some confusing console messages.

The drive is a seagate 10/20GB travan on hdc
Driver is ide-scsi. used via symlink /dev/tape to /dev/nst0
/dev/nst0 is crw-rw----, owner:root, group:tape
major device 9, minor 128

Whenever the drive is used, I get :
"st0: Error with sense data: [valid=0] Info fld=0x0, Current st09:00: sense key I
Ilegal Request
Additional sense indicates Invalid command operation code"
on the console

Also, the tape is detected as scsi host 0, channel 0, ID 0, Lun 01, 02...07

Has anyone seen this before, or can anyone help?

TIA

I found this:

http://www.uwsg.iu.edu/hypermail/lin...03.0/0380.html

What it had to say:

"Those errors messages are coming from the drive itself.

Do you have the right kind of tape installed?
Does the media need to be formatted first?
Did you send the correct drive settings (via the 'mt' command)?

these issues often bite tape users-"

Also check your cable & terminator. And it could be a bad unit...

Here's my google:
