Trouble with null modem cable

I'm trying to get plip to enable transfer of data between my computer and my old laptop via parallel port. I modprobed plip0 on both sides as well as issued this on one computer:

ifconfig plip0 192.168.0.4 pointopoint 192.168.1.55

and this on the other:

ifconfig plip0 192.168.1.55 pointopoint 192.168.0.4

Those succeeded, but the problem is that I can't literally send data from one device to the other (the ping times out, and sshing across doesn't work). Is it possible that what I think is a null modem cable really isn't? It fits on both sides.

Also, is there another way to test whether or not the parallel connection actually works or to send data across via another protocol?

A true null modem cable is for connecting two computers together via the serial port. It is similar to a crossover ethernet cable in function. Serial cables do come in both 9 and 25 pin varieties and both male/female connectors.

What you need for a plip connection can be referred to as a direct connection, LapLink or null printer cable. The easy way to tell if you have a null modem cable is check the continuity between pin 2 on one end and 3 on the other with a wire checker or ohmmeter. BTW you can google for wiring schematics for both serial and parallel cables.

If you do indeed have the correct cable make sure that no other parallel port applications are running like cups.
