Trouble with my Nvidia drivers - Geforce2 MX 400 + Slackware 11

Hi,

I have a Nvidia Geforce2 MX 400 graphics card & installed Slackware 11. I have a normal CRT 17" monitor.

Now the problem is when I install the driver (latest legacy driver from nvidia.com) in xorg.conf it booted into x (KDE) fine once. But was very unstable and then crashed on me. It continues to work fine as long as I don't tell xorg.conf to use the nvidia driver. i.e. "vesa" still works but "nv" causes the crash. Now with "nv" it won't even load X but gives me problems. I post the below output to give you more info:

Sorry for the long post but this gives you pretty much everything I know......

Have you tried changing the NvAGP option? I usually stick with agpgart instead of NvAGP, and I've had no problems.

lrt2003 03-15-2007 01:05 AM

Thanks for your reply elyk, much appreciated.

Just tried changing NVAGP to "0" and then "2". And have tried commenting out that line completely, same error.

Oh, I'm on a Intel® 845 Chipset which is on the "NVAGP" supported list. If that helps..

I'm working hard on this problem but not getting anywhere right now. I have some more info though.

from /proc

IRQ: 5
Video bios: ??.??.??.??
Card type: AGP
Fast writes: supported
SBA: not supported
AGP Rates: 4x 2x 1x
Host-bridge: nothing!!
AGP Status: Disabled

from dmesg

PCI: Using IRQ router PIIX/ICH [8086/2440] at 00:1f.0
serial driver ... SHARE_IRQ SERIAL_PCI enabled
agpgart: AGP apertue is 64M @ 0xe8000000
NVRM loading Nvidia x86 kernel module
PCI: Found IRQ 9 00:1f.5
PCI: Sharing IRQ 9 00:1f.3
NVRM: not using NVAGP, AGPGART is loaded
NVRM: rm_init_adapter(0) failed

From the NVIDIA README it says it could be 1) PCI IRQ routing errors or 2) I/O APIC problems/conflicts with other devices.

I don't have any PCI cards in there. It's in my AGP slot.

It says I should changed the kernel parameters.. pci=noacpi, pci=biosirq, noapic, acpi=off

So I gotta try figure out how to change kernel paremeters..

I'm working really hard on this problem, I won't stop until I fix it, but some help would be great :)

lrt2003 03-15-2007 02:39 AM

Alright ppl, I've just recompiled my kernel with the "ACPI" and "APIC" removed, rejigged the LILO config and booted into the new kernel. Then I've recompiled the NVIDIA driver to suit the new kernel. Rebooted. Tried it.. still nothing!

Argh. Argh I tell ya!

Hern_28 03-15-2007 08:42 AM

Not sure if this will help.

Hey

I have a Gefore 6800GS SLI and it was VEEEEEERRRRYY unstable with slackware 11.0. I couldn't even get the nvidia drivers to install. I am using an AMD chipset but found that slam64 linux runs perfectly with the 64 bit Nvidia driver. If your up to a reinstall might try that. The platforms are supported but I have found different ones work better with different combinations. The Nvidia drivers are working perfectly in slackware 11 on the downstairs computer Geforce 5200 but not on this one hehhe. Worked for me.

Try the Nvidia 8776 drivers

From your logs, it appears that you are running the 7184 of the nvidia driver. I would recommend upgrading to the 8776 drivers (http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d...1.0-8776.html). I was having some issues with my nVidia card (MX 440) and the 8776 drivers work great for me.
