Trouble with DVD/CDRW combo drive

I have a CDRW drive that also reads (not writes) DVDs. It has limited functionality on my installation of Mandrake 9.0: I can burn CDs with X-CD-roast, and I can play DVDs by using Mplayer. However, I can not access a data cd by cd-ing to /mnt/cdrom, and I cannot play an audio cd on XMMS by selecting "play directory" and using /mnt/cdrom. I think that the computer has detected the drive somehow but has trouble mounting it as a directory. Has anyone else found a way around this?

Look at the /etc/fstab file and see what device is supposed to be mounted to /mnt/cdrom. It is usually /dev/cdrom which is just a link to the actual device. A cdwriter with SCSI emulation would be /dev/scd0.

Look at MDK control center under hardware and see what the OS thinks the device should be.

My solution

I don't know if you're having the same problems I did, but I just fixed mine by editing /etc/fstab...

The first problem I had was that mplayer couldn't find /dev/dvd, which I fixed by symlinking /dev/dvd to /dev/scd0 (I believe that was the name of my drive). Then, to get data CDs to mount, I went into fstab and changed whatever it had for the optical drive to /dev/scd0. I guess that way the system could tell that it was a mountable device and after I rebooted, everything worked fine.
