trouble w/ video cards

i am loading linux on older machines and i have some older video cards as well. when i finish loading and linux tries to boot directly into a graphical startup, i get the error:

INIT: id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

i then try a different video card and it works just fine. when i checked for compatibility on the redhat website, i saw all the video cards i am using should work.

i am having trouble with s3, ark, and cirrus logic cards. are there different drivers out there i should be using? any help would be greatly appreciated!! by the way, i am using redhat 7.3.
