trouble setting perms for USB drive (Lacie databank)

Hi

Line in fstab:
/dev/sda1 /mnt/lacie auto w,user,gid=501,mode=770

Now this should mean that group 501, "Users" on my system has rwx access. Not so. The group is set to "Users" right enough, but the perms are 755... Is there something i'm doing wrong? I'm still using kernel 2.4.18 as I was having probs getting 2.4.21 to work right, but I know the USB support is meant to be better in 2.4.21... Also the drive does not have the USB conformance logo, so maybe thats the problem?

Fish,
M
